Terracotta vases and masks just brought from the firing!

Name Tag

During one of the lessons we started off with creating a cast from clay using plastic letters, according to each child's name initial or favourite number. We then made a mixture of Plaster of Paris and water and poured it on mould, finishing off with a hook to be able to hang it up once ready.

Next stage is to remove the cast from the mould, wash the Plaster of Paris from the clay, leave it to dry and then decorating and painting it. You should prepare a small place where the kids can hang up their statement tag :-)

P.S. Although several activities are going on simultaneously with different groups, all the children will do the same craft activities eventually. I will surely keep you posted!

Paper Mache hanging mask

With some of the classes, we started off the Paper Mache process with lots of newspaper and glue! The aim is to produce a Venetian-inspired mask or a mask inspired by the 50's vintage look, but that is a surprise we'll leave till the painting process!

For the first lesson on this project, the children created the base of the mask on one side of a balloon after smearing it with Vaseline and then applying several layers of newspaper and glue. We have also spoken about the similar (but obviously more grand) process of the Carnival floats.

Next stage of this project would be painting and decorating...

Paul Klee

Dogmatic Composition

This week we learned about the Swiss artist Paul Klee, whose paintings are criticized of being very child-like and naive. We find lots of colours, shapes and ,mostly the domination of line. In fact, one of his famous quotes are: "A line is a dot which goes for a walk". We find an abundance of lines and meaningful symbols and even alphabet letters throughout his work.

The main inspiring works for this week's lesson were those shown.

You can follow this link to view more of Klee's capturing paintings: Paul Klee

This is what the kids came up with:
